With a unique combination of historical insight and modern design sensibilities, Ar. Vaibhavi Patel has carved a niche for herself in the architectural world. As the founder of Working_Hands Design Studio, she has built a reputation for creating functional, sustainable spaces that reflect both client needs and cultural significance.
Vaibhavi’s journey into architecture was inspired by her interest in the rich architectural heritage of Gujarat. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from CEPT University in 2011, she began working on projects that explored the intersection of culture and design. Her dissertation on early temple and mosque architecture in Gujarat laid the foundation for her commitment to cultural preservation.
Vaibhavi’s design philosophy places great importance on the sustainability of materials and processes. She emphasizes the importance of creating spaces that are both functional and environmentally conscious. Her project in Himachal Pradesh, a traditional Kath-Khuni style home-stay, exemplifies her ability to blend local materials and traditional methods with modern-day requirements.
“This project allowed me to combine my love for traditional architecture with my commitment to sustainable design,” Vaibhavi reflects.
Entrepreneurship in architecture comes with its share of challenges, from balancing budgets to managing client expectations. Vaibhavi faced these early on but navigated through them with strong communication skills and a creative, adaptable approach.
“Every challenge presents an opportunity to grow,” she says. “Being flexible and learning to understand the client’s deeper needs was crucial to overcoming obstacles.”
Vaibhavi is fully invested in the global movement towards green architecture. She believes that the future of architecture lies in sustainable design, and her work is a reflection of that belief. She sees the growing trend toward eco-friendly buildings as a necessary and inevitable shift in the industry.
To young architects, Vaibhavi advises: “Never stop learning. The world needs your vision. Design with care, passion, and purpose. Your creations will shape the future.”
