Building a Legacy: The Architectural Journey of Ar. Kunal Kuwadekar

I am an architect who graduated in 2000 from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), UK, and currently serve as the principal architect at Naren Kuwadekar & Associates. Our architectural firm, based in Mumbai, has been practicing within India since 1975, and over the years, we have built an impressive portfolio, having developed over 150 million square feet of projects across the country. As the owner and principal architect, I lead a talented team that includes architects, designers, engineers, and project managers. Together, we have been practicing for over five decades, contributing to India’s urban landscape through a wide range of projects, from residential complexes and commercial buildings to large-scale townships and educational institutions.

Joining the family business seemed like a natural progression for me, though it was preceded by valuable experiences gained abroad. Having worked in multiple cities outside of Mumbai, I initially took charge of the interior design aspect of the firm. This allowed me to develop a deep understanding of design principles, which later expanded to overseeing the architectural dimension of the business. Today, our firm is recognized for its multi-story structures, urban rejuvenation projects, and redevelopment of various sectors within the city.

Redevelopment is at the heart of what we do. Our business manages all sorts of redevelopment projects, ranging from residential and commercial complexes to entire townships and educational institutions. Currently, we are working on city-wide rejuvenation projects, focusing on the redevelopment of existing housing societies, institutional buildings, and schools. In collaboration with the government, we are also reconstructing and rehabilitating government staff quarters and institutional structures, a task that underscores our commitment to improving the living conditions for many people in the public sector.

Our practice extends across India, and we have had the privilege of contributing to several iconic projects, particularly in Mumbai and other cities. Some of our most notable works include the Taj Lands End in Mumbai, the Kingdom of Dreams in Delhi, Jamnabai Narsee School, GIFT City, and MIT Gurukul in Pune. Each of these projects carries its own set of challenges and demands, but they all share a common goal: creating structures that blend aesthetic appeal with functional utility.

The impact of architecture on society is immense, particularly when we think about the long-lasting influence buildings have on both the visual and utilitarian aspects of urban spaces. The structures we design and build today become an integral part of a city’s fabric, impacting not only the current generation but also future ones. As architects, we must carry the responsibility of ensuring that our work not only meets present needs but also remains relevant and beneficial in the long term. Our firm’s expertise lies in townships, high-rise structures, and redevelopment projects, where we also emphasize sustainability and regulatory compliance. These factors, we believe, form the foundation of a successful architectural practice, as they ensure that our projects are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible and legally sound.

Our unique selling proposition (USP) stems from our ability to work on both micro-scale and macro-scale projects. Whether we are designing a small residential complex or a sprawling luxury hotel, our team approaches each project with the same level of dedication and attention to detail. Over the years, we have gained expertise across various sectors, including residential townships, high-end luxury hotels, and educational institutions. This breadth of experience allows us to offer comprehensive solutions that meet our clients’ diverse needs. Our ultimate goal is to fulfill client satisfaction while also creating a positive impact on society as a whole.

The future of our business looks bright, especially as India continues to experience rapid urbanization. We see tremendous growth potential in tier-two and tier-three cities, where the demand for redevelopment and expansion is increasing. Additionally, the international market’s focus on India presents exciting opportunities for growth. As a firm, we are well-positioned to take advantage of these opportunities, and we anticipate that the next 25 years will be a period of significant expansion for our business. The trend toward urban rejuvenation, coupled with the focus on sustainable development, ensures that architecture will remain a crucial component of India’s growth story.

Much of my inspiration for architecture comes from my family lineage. My father, a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Architects, played a significant role in shaping my early interest in the field. Additionally, my maternal uncle, the renowned architect Mr. Achyut Kanvinde, further instilled a deep passion for architecture in me. These family influences, combined with my own interest and love for the craft, have been instrumental in shaping my career. Architecture is more than just a profession for me; it is a passion that has been nurtured over years of learning, experimentation, and practical application.

However, the journey has not been without its challenges. As an entrepreneur, I face numerous struggles, from navigating regulatory compliance to ensuring timely delivery of projects and maintaining stringent quality controls. The architectural industry in India is highly regulated, and keeping up with the constantly changing rules and guidelines can be overwhelming at times. But through it all, we have been fortunate to partner with some excellent individuals and organizations who have helped us overcome these challenges. Each project we work on teaches us something new, and these lessons allow us to improve and innovate continuously.

Sustainability is a growing concern in the world of architecture, and it is an issue that we take very seriously at our firm. There is a noticeable shift in people’s attitudes toward creating structures that are environmentally friendly and carbon-neutral. This is especially true in India, where the conversation around energy consumption and sustainable building practices is gaining momentum. As architects, we have a responsibility to design buildings that not only meet the needs of our clients but also minimize the impact on the environment. This means incorporating green building techniques, using energy-efficient materials, and designing spaces that reduce carbon footprints. We are excited to be a part of this movement and are continually exploring new ways to incorporate sustainability into our projects.

Technology is also playing an increasingly important role in our industry. From advanced software for designing and modeling to innovative construction techniques, technology is transforming the way we approach architecture. At our firm, we have embraced this change and are constantly looking for new tools and technologies that can enhance our work. Whether it’s using 3D modeling software to create more accurate designs or employing cutting-edge construction methods that reduce waste, we are committed to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in architecture.

Looking back on my journey, I am proud of what we have accomplished at Naren Kuwadekar & Associates. From small beginnings, we have grown into a firm that is respected for its expertise, creativity, and commitment to excellence. But more than that, I am proud of the impact we have had on society. The buildings we design and construct are not just structures; they are spaces where people live, work, and learn. They contribute to the identity of a city and play a crucial role in shaping the way people interact with their environment. This is a responsibility that we take very seriously, and it is something that drives us to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in architecture.

As we move forward, I am excited about the future of our firm. The challenges we face as architects are constantly evolving, but so too are the opportunities. With the increasing demand for sustainable, energy-efficient buildings and the rapid urbanization of India’s cities, there is a growing need for architects who can balance creativity with practicality. At Naren Kuwadekar & Associates, we are ready to meet this demand head-on and continue contributing to the development of India’s urban landscape.

My journey as an architect has been one of continuous learning and growth. From my early days working abroad to leading one of India’s most respected architectural firms, I have learned the importance of balancing creativity with functionality, sustainability with aesthetics, and tradition with innovation. I am deeply passionate about architecture, and I am committed to continuing my work in this field for many years to come. The future of architecture in India is bright, and I am excited to be a part of it.
